Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
There is Power in the Blood!
Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a biologic solution that we process from your own blood. PRP contains a high concentration of platelets, growth factors and signaling agents to help your body and your injury heal in a natural way. It has been in clinical use since the 1990s and there have been many randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to support both it's safety and efficacy for a wide range of injuries that we treat. At Alliance Regen & Rehab, we use PRP with great success to help patients in the St. Petersburg/Tampa, FL area recover from sports injury and overcome chronic pain.
How Does PRP Heal My Body?
During treatment, PRP is injected into the injured area with ultrasound guidance to insure accurate placement of the PRP. It then sends the body's healing pathways into overdrive, which can:
- Trigger growth of new, healthy tissue
- Prevent degeneration of tissues
- Reduce inflammation/control inflammation
- Attract and activate stem cells to repair and regenerate new tissue
- Accelerate healing
How Is PRP Produced?
One of the best aspects of PRP is that it is derived from your own blood, which never leaves our clinic. After taking a small amount of your blood, it is then spun in a centrifuge where the different components of blood are separated. We remove unwanted materials (i.e. RBCs and WBCs) while concentrating platelets, growth factors and signaling proteins to improve healing. This entire process, which generally takes < 30 minutes, is done in our lab, inside of our clinic, while you wait.
What Should I Expect During My Treatment?
First, we will scan the area to determine the exact tissue that is damaged and in some cases will administer a diagnostic lidocaine injection. Using a small needle, we draw a small amount of blood, then it will be processed in our lab while you wait. Once it is ready, our physician will inject it directly into your damaged tissue.
Depending on the nature of the injury, you may need more than one PRP treatment to achieve the desired/optimal outcome. Dr. John Broussard will outline the treatment plan and map out exactly what you will need to do following the treatment including activity modification and incorporation of high quality physical therapy.
PRP is FDA-Cleared
Alliance Regen & Rehab prioritizes patient safety and efficacy and therefore we process PRP in our in-house lab using FDA cleared procedures and supplies. Additionally, you can be rest assured that our board certified, fellowship trained regenerative sports medicine physician will examine you, discuss treatment options, and perform all of your injections and follow up care.
